Discovering GPS and Geocaching Learn how to use a GPS unit and the basics of GPS navigation from certified instructor Brenda Detta. In this introductory 3-hour course, which takes place here at the inn, you will get hands-on experience using a supplied GPS unit. You will learn how to: pinpoint your location, enter coordinates, mark waypoints, plot a course and create routes. If you haven't heard about Geocaching yet, it's only a matter of time. This internet based treasure-hunting (and treasure-hiding) game has quickly become very popular world wide. Brenda will show you how to use a GPS unit to join in the fun. Birding in the Almaguin Highlands Discover the birds of the Almaguin Highlands under the guidance of a local birder. Meet your guide early on your first morning for a half-day excursion, then spend your afternoon and evening exploring on your own. Meander down our own trails before turning in for the night to listen to the evening activity and perhaps hear an owl hoot. The Almaguin Highlands is located on the western slope of the Algonquin Dome and is an area of mixed forests and plentiful lakes and rivers. Some of the bird species in the area are... Breeding Birds: Lincoln's Sparrow, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Wood Warblers including northern Parula, Black-throated Blue, Blackburnian, Mourning and more Typically northern species: Gray Jay, Boreal Chickadee, Black-backed Woodpecker Dusk and Night Callers: Hermit Thrush, Swainson's Thrush, Veery, Barred Owls Your package includes: • Accommodation for two nights • Delicious, early-morning breakfasts • half day guided birding

Day Hike on the Seguin Trail

Seguin Trail by a lake A hike along the Seguin Recreation Trail from Fern Glen Inn to the town of Sprucedale will take you through woods and meadows, past lakes and marshes. It's a beautiful landscape that changes with the seasons, yet always intrigues and delights.

A former railway bed, the trail is now an easy, level path through wilderness that is inaccessible by car. On the approximately 13 km walk to Sprucedale, you may pass other hikers, cyclists or ATV enthusiasts. If you're lucky, you may even see deer, moose or other wildlife. As lovely as it is, we figure you'll only wish to hike it one way. That's why we're offering to pick you up from Sprucedale and drive you back to the inn.

Free pick-up service is offered during the slow seasons for guests staying with us for two nights or longer. Advance notice requested; subject to availability.

Optional Extra
For an extra $15, we will provide some essentials for your day hike, conveniently packed in a knapsack for your use.
Essentials include:
• bottled water
• trail snacks
• whistle or noise makers
• rain ponchos
• tissues and hand sanitizer
